Franz Josef

We slept late; explored all that Franz Josef had to offer. Turns out that’s not a great deal, which suited us just fine.

In the afternoon we made the short trip south to see the Fox Glacier – another magnificent dirty snowball (not a mint). We walked to the terminal face. Walked back. Fun was had. Photos were taken.

We then walked around Lake Mathieson. More beautiful vistas.

Finally we went to the coast and walked up Gillespie Beach; saw the rusted remains of gold mining equipment and played with the driftwood and pebbles.

Then home, stopping briefly to be blown away by the views of Fox Glacier on the way.

Back in 1860, one member of Julius Von Haast’s survey party commented; “I am getting sick of fine scenery and mountains and longing for open country”

Tomorrow we head for open country and Wanaka.
