We rose early to take advantage of the cool morning and headed up to Mount Aspiring National Park and the Rob Roy Valley, along 30 km of unsealed road.
Feeling very intrepid we dodged sheep and cattle, forded streams and finally made it to the carpark only to find campervans and family cars there disgorging grey nomads when we arrived.
We did beat most of them to the track though – which was spectacular (yes this post contains more superlatives). Tramped through wildflower meadows, and forests, along riverbanks and up mountains. And the picnic point at the end has a view up to the Rob Roy glacier. Amazing. Barney’s pick of the trip so far.
Then retreated back to our comfortable room for a shower and a sit down before ambling into Wanaka for dinner. Tired and full – our slow walk back was timed to watch the sunset over the lake. This place really does know how to turn it on.
