We woke and headed over the road to the beach; Piha’s beaches are made up of a fine, black, volcanic sand that shimmers is the sun.
We walked down to Lion Rock; so called because at sunset it’s mane glows golden – which I’d suggest might be poetic bollocks. It sure does look nice though and the view from half way up shows off the long stretches of beach to the north and south. It’s okay here.
We went to the Cafe for a light breakfast / lunch (we’re still on Brisbane time and it was technically breakfast time). We met Emily and Eamonn for a short walk in the Waitakere Ranges – a cliff walk which seemed overly popular judging by the bulging carpark. Featured the ‘Piano’ beach from movie of the same name and we came upon a large number of LARPers (at least I assume that was what they were – how else to explain more than 100 people dressed in medieval battle garb, complete with make-up and weapons, on a Sunday afternoon…). Very incongruous.
Walk complete we have collapsed in our respective houses for a rest and we’ll regroup tonight for scratch dinner and whiskey. (no shops here, just one cafe and the bowls club). Will report tomorrow on adventures involved in navigating narrow vertical driveways on hairpin bends in the dark…no whiskey for Leigh (maybe one).
