Today we left the Bay of Islands and the Northland and ambled toward Auckland.
It’s worth dwelling on Northland for a moment before we move on; I just want to point out how astonishingly beautiful it is. Northland may just be a ramshackle collection of tatty towns nestled amid the most verdant, lush, Teletubbies-eque landscape but it is quite stunning. There are lovely forests and a the Bay of Islands as well, but for me … it’s the rolling hills that will stay with me for the longest.
We broke the journey south with a visit to Leigh (for obvious reasons). A pretty little town which is the springboard for Goat Island – a large marine reserve. The photos from the day are currently limited to Leigh in Leigh.
Now we are in Auckland, the big city. After finding some clean clothes, we headed out to the funky suburb of Ponsonby where we quickly found a bar with great music and a pizza joint with most excellent pizzas. We think we’ll like Ponsonby.
