This morning promised to be a beautiful day, none-the-less we started slow with a wander through the Taupo shops and a leisurely breakfast. Then we set off for Redwoods (a redwood forest) just south east of Rotorua. There were many walks – we chose a quick loop to get the feel of it (beautiful, in case you were wondering, but lots of tourists). Then we went further afield to visit Lake Rotokakahi (Green Lake), Lake Tikitapu (Blue Lake), for a walk around the blue one. This area was all affected by the Mount Tarawera eruption that decimated the local population in 1886 – just as it was becoming a popular tourist destination (which we learned about yesterday in the museum).
Then home again – another photo opportunity for rolling hills lit by the setting sun – and now to pack and prepare for a big driving day tomorrow.
Taupo has been an excellent base for a few days – and so much still to do – next time.
