Day 18 – Khandallah and other ‘burbs, Te Papa and Cuba Street

Today was forecast as showers and rain – but we had a plan; some further exploring of Wellington’s many suburbs and then a trip to Te Papa and the Scale of Our War exhibition.

After some wrong turns and some closed roads, we made it to Khandallah up in the hills of Wellington. We had breakfast and coffee and popped into the supermarket (it seems as if this has become a mandatory step in each day). The morning was sunny and by the time we were heading into the city and Te Papa there was no sign of the rain.

The Scale of Our War exhibition is hard to describe; it’s a very Kiwi take on the ANZAC story told in an astonishing way. You are taken through the NZ campaign through the experiences of a few key people – and each person is illustrated with giant, larger than life figure (built in remarkable detail by the talented people at WETA here in Wellington). Words can’t really do it justice (nor can some hastily taken iPhone photos), I recommend taking a look at their website for the stories and the background.

We stepped out of Te Papa blinking into yet more brilliant sunshine – so decided to take a walk through the city before ending up in another night market where I practiced my street photography and we ate. A lot. We’re still waiting for the rain.
