Day 21 – Nelson and the Treasured Pathway (aka SH 6)

Today is ANZAC day, so we crawled out of bed and walked through the brisk Picton pre-dawn to gather at the sea front with the rest of the town for the dawn service. It was a lovely and the integration of Maori into the service was a new experience for us.

After breakfast we headed for Nelson, a larger town an hour or so to the west. The drive between Picton and Nelson is quite simply stunning; rolling hills, dense forests, rivers, vine yards … it’s just insane view after insane view. Nelson itself is a lovely little city – it would be a great place to spend a week. But we only had a few hours so we strolled the streets and then headed to a nearby hill to get some views.

The journey back was just as lovely as the journey there, but with the mist burnt off and the sun setting behind us … totally different.

We’re now back in Picton for our last night; perhaps some fish and chips down at the front (then an early night – it was an early start this morning).
