Wellington thoughts

I’ve been living in Wellington now for six weeks here are some thoughts.

  1. The coffee is really, really good.
  2. Food in cafes and restaurants is also really good.
  3. The supermarkets are always open (and sell good meat, fresh mussels and beer and wine).
  4. Farmers markets are excellent for fruit and veg (but you don’t get a huge amount of variety).
  5. Cinemas in Wellington (in the suburbs) are fantastic (small, licensed, great food, super comfy).
  6. International chains are not common here.
  7. The people are really friendly.
  8. Everybody knows everybody.
  9. Everything is really close to you no matter where you are.
  10. It’s really pretty.
  11. People are really fit and active here.
  12. There are hardly any overweight people.
  13. Old people don’t look or behave like old people.
  14. The weather is really changeable in the spring.
  15. The weather isn’t as awful as you imagine (but can still be pretty bad).
  16. It’s windy … but not all the time.
  17. There’s not as much salt in food.
  18. Earthquakes are scary, but not as scary as you imagine.
  19. The countryside is beautiful.
  20. Everyone is ecologically aware.
  21. Not everyone works for Weta / Xero / the Government.
  22. There are a lot of different nationalities who call Wellington home.
  23. The TV is awful (yes, worse than Australia).
  24. Everywhere plays good 80’s and 90’s music.
  25. There is nothing better than Wellington on a good day.

Make of that what you will.
