Anyone who knows me, will say I’m a bit weather obsessed. But I need to put you straight … I’m no more weather obsessed than the next guy … it’s just when the weather is scary or amazing or horrible, I feel the need to talk about it. Surely you are the same?
For the last three months, the weather in Wellington has been a solid 7/10. Sometimes amazing, occasionally awful, but mostly fine. Not exactly like the summers I’m used to, but t-shirt weather most of the time.
It’s also super changeable – so bad weather doesn’t hang around (nor, by the same token, does the good weather). That definitely keeps things interesting.
It’s also (I have been reliably informed) a spectacularly bad summer this year … like the worst Summer in living memory. So that’s a thing.
All in all though, I’ve been fine with the weather so far -and on a beautiful day, holy crap Wellington is probably the most gorgeous city in the world. Seriously.
We do need to talk about the wind. I do like a blustery day … I always have. It’s invigorating and exciting … there is a genuine thrill to having the wind tug and pull at your clothing; to have it push you down the street or to have to fight it to move forward.
But this is silly … it is unrelenting (or seems to be at the moment).
We’ve had 60 kph several times over the last few weeks … usually sticking around for about 24 hours. We even had 160 kph over one recent 36 hour period. Even on a “still” day, there’s usually a 15 – 25 kph “breeze” (which in the summer is welcome_
I can only imagine the frozen wind chill hell that winter will bring.
No big adventures this weekend. We did go for a walk in the Wilton Otari Bush which was far, far more impressive than I imagined it to be. Picturesque little streams and well maintained (although steep) tracks arranged in short loops. A great place to hike for between an hour and maybe 3 (at a push) – oh and 10 minute from the centre of Wellington.
We’re also expecting visitors this coming Friday … which we’re very excited about. I really hope the weather is good.
