Matukituki and Rob Roy

We woke (late) with a blanket of grey featureless cloud 100 feet above us. This didn’t detract from the beauty of the one hour drive from Wanaka to the Raspberry Creek car park. The landscape wouldn’t have looked out of place in any fantasy movie (replace Shadowfax with a plucky white Toyota Yaris … we call her Snowflake).

But then, it got even more beautiful. As we left metalled road for dirt track that takes you up the Matukituki Valley, patches of sun began to break through revealing the towering, snow dusted peaks in every direction you can look. Within half an hour there was not a cloud in the sky.

Snowflake carried us well, but eventually we encountered one of the larger, more ominous fords. We abandoned her in the company of many other small cars that had also decided not to brave the ford of doom. The walk down the valley for the final 3 kilometres was no hardship.

Words cannot do justice to the beauty of this place.

We walked up to the Rob Roy Glacier (well, toward the Rob Roy Glacier). The track follows the Rob Roy river that I presume carries water from the glacier to Matukituki River. It’s real pretty. Those with good memories may remember us going on and on endlessly about this track four years ago on our first trip. Take it from me, it stands a second visit.

That night we ate courtesy of the local super market.
