We’re about to embark on what I hope to be a whirlwind of travel, excitement, and questionable decisions. From late August to early October, we’ll be crossing many time zones, sampling many foods and wines, and probably arguing over directions and what constitutes “essential”.
It’s been a while since our last big trip and the world has moved on. Booking flights, changing money, and figuring out SIM cards has all changed. So we’re diving into this brave new travel world armed with a collection of apps that promise to make it all seamless (they probably won’t).
Here’s what the itinerary looks like at the moment. (Subject to change, delays, or our inability to follow a plan):
• Singapore (27 August to 3 September): A week of eating, sweating in the humidity, and probably marvelling at how efficient everything is. If I don’t end up in a food coma from all the hawker centres, it’ll be a shock.
• London (3 to 10 September): Back to the land of tea, crumpets, and extortionate Airbnb prices. Expect updates on whether the city is still as noisy, dirty and grumpy as we remember.
• Berlin (10–16 September): Art, history, and (possibly) getting lost on the U-Bahn. Berlin promises to be a blend of awe and currywurst, and we’re (I’m) here for it. Duolingo better not have let me down.
• UK (16–27 September): A whirlwind tour of identical high-streets, beautiful countryside, endless terraced houses and a whole heap of nostalgia.
• London (Again) (27–29 September): Because one week in London isn’t enough. Also, let’s be honest, it’s a convenient layover before heading back home.
Then home. No planned stop-overs other than a few miserable hours in Singapore Airport and Auckland.
We’ll be sharing updates, photos, and maybe some stories (some might even be entertaining or amusing). If you’ve got tips for any of these places, let us know… we’re always open to suggestions.
Here’s to adventures, mishaps, and memories that we can awkwardly laugh about later!
