The flights from Wellington to Singapore were perfectly uneventful… just the way long-haul should be. Wellington, Auckland, and Changi airports all did their part to make transiting as painless as possible… fast, extremely efficient, almost pleasant.
Last night, after finding our accommodation, we braved Orchard Road in search of bearings and sustenance. And reader, our marriage nearly ended. Overly tired, overheated outside and then shivering in arctic-strength air-con inside, we staggered around like clueless zombies. We eventually secured fruit, sushi, bread and avocado. We made it back to the room, ate and collapsed into the delirious half-sleep of the jet-lagged… wide awake and dog-tired, all at once.
This morning, with a spring in our step, we gave Orchard Road a calmer second look before meeting a friend for breakfast. A walk down the length of Orchard Road, then Chinatown… temples, backstreets, shophouses and an overwhelming hour learning about how Singapore is planning for the future. From there we walked (yes, walked and not in a straight line) to Gardens by the Bay. We explored more opulent malls, hawkered for a light dinner, took in the Supertrees and their evening light show (fun, but a bit unremarkable), and rode the MRT home, navigating expertly via supermarket (again).
By the time we stumbled back into our apartment we had walked 20 km in 34-degree heat and significant humidity. We’ve collapsed in a heap… day seized.
