Day twenty two – The Cam, the Wensum and a Little Ouse

We explored Cambridge thoroughly this morning. We poked around its beautiful lanes and gawked at the amazing college buildings. We strolled along the Cam and even squeezed in a bit of shopping. A massive brunch may last us the week.

We’d been to Cambridge before, and it was much as we remembered, though perhaps with a few more potholes.

The drive to Norwich was uneventful, but the flat, lush countryside was lovely to see. And then in Norwich familiar road names started to surface. Unthank Road, where I paid rent every month for two years, carried us into the centre. Some of the pubs are still there too, though their names have changed.

After a few laps of the one-way system we found the Airbnb… compact, comfortable, everything we need. With a couple of daylight hours left we went exploring. Beyond the market in the centre of the city and the cathedral, I recognised little… but loved what I saw. The crooked lanes and houses, the astonishing number of churches and pubs. When I was here, the saying was a church for every week of the year and a pub for every day. I suspect it’s not much of an exaggeration.

We walked until dark, bought supplies, and returned to base.
