Gluten-Free Wellington

Wellington, like much of New Zealand, has plenty to offer for coeliacs and the gluten-intolerant. While it’s not quite gluten-free paradise, you won’t go hungry, especially if you know where to look. With supermarkets, Woolworths seem to lead the way with a wider selection of gluten-free goodies compared to New World (though both are respectable). Commonsense Organics is a solid choice for specialty items, albeit on the pricier side, while Moore Wilson’s in the city has a decent range of gluten-free bread, crackers, and other fancy staples to stock your pantry.

When it comes to cafés, most will have the obligatory friand or brownie … but some go above and beyond. Here are a few favourites that make a real effort:

Neo Café & Eatery (132 Willis St): A great spot for breakfast and lunch with a decent menu and reliably delicious gluten-free options.

Smith the Grocer (Old Bank Arcade, 233 Lambton Quay): An old school café serving up a reasonable selection of gluten-free foods alongside their standard fare. It’s the kind of place your parents would love.

The Botanist (Lyall Bay Parade): With a view of the sea (if you crane your neck) and a menu full of gluten-free and plant-based delights, it’s a good option in you’re in the ‘hood.

And when it’s time for dinner, most restaurants will have something to keep you happy … as long as you’re okay with a kitchen that also prepares gluten-filled dishes. But for those who really go above and beyond, here are a few standouts:

BambuchiSan (14 Roxburgh St, Mount Victoria): Simply the best. This is fully gluten-free gem and offers dishes so good you won’t even think about what’s missing. Delicious, creative, and surprisingly affordable.

The Botanist (Lyall Bay Parade): Yes, it’s good enough to make the list twice … although be warned, their dinner menu is much the same as their brunch menu.

Hillside Kitchen (241 Tinakori Rd, Thorndon): A fine dining (Wellington style) experience that celebrates local ingredients, foraging with a gluten-free friendly approach.

Bebemos (88 Riddiford St, Newtown) A sometimes lively pub with clearly marked gluten-free options, Bebemos has a slightly different, Brazilian inspired menu.

This isn’t an exhaustive list (we’ll keep adding more), but these are some of the best bets we’ve found for dining gluten-free in Wellington. You’ll find plenty to keep your stomach happy.
