Wellington

We’ve gathered a fair bit of information since we moved here. Where to eat and drink, interesting shops and plenty of things to see and do.

Also, if you have one day in Wellington, here are some suggestions.

Earthquakes

Earthquake advice

Yes, there’s a small chance you’ll feel an earthquake while you’re here.

Most quakes are over before you even realise what they were … nothing to worry about. Often, they’re so minor they feel like a truck driving past, a strong gust of wind, or even your partner rolling over in bed.

If you do feel a quake and want to play it safe, remember:

  • Drop to the ground (so you don’t fall).
  • Cover yourself under a sturdy table or similar (light fixtures and things on shelves can fall).

Most people don’t react at all, but if you dive under a table only to find out it was just a passing truck—don’t worry. People here are very understanding.

Dressing for Wellington

No Matter the Time of Year… It Might Be Windy

Summer / Autumn

  • Bring a windproof/showerproof coat.
  • Pack shorts, t-shirts, jeans, light jumpers, and a heavier jumper for cooler evenings.
  • A good-fitting cap or hat is a must.
  • A light cardigan can come in handy.
  • Don’t forget comfortable walking shoes.

Winter / Spring

  • Opt for a warm, windproof/showerproof coat.
  • Stick to jeans, heavy jumpers, and a warm hat or cap.
  • A cardigan adds a bit of versatility.
  • Comfortable walking shoes are still essential.

General Tips
Layers are your best friend. Bring plenty of options and be ready to carry them with you when you head out.

The MetService is your go-to for weather forecasts (although YR is also good). Keep in mind that temperatures feel warmer here than in Australia … 20°C in New Zealand feels more like 25°C in Brisbane. (It’s partly because temperatures are recorded in the shade and trust me, the difference between sun and shade is huge compared to Brisbane.)

One last thing: you will get a tan. Even if you usually avoid the sun, you’ll find yourself catching some colour. Be ready with sunscreen and clothing to cover up.

Here’s a little more information about the weather here (I am obsessed with the weather – a fact I will not appologise for).
