Raro is not all white sand, warm water, fried food and mayonnaise.
Today it rained.
Not hard. Just steadily. All day.
Leigh went to a spa first thing, then we gave the bikes a rest (our butts were very grateful), and jumped on an anti-clockwise bus into Avarua.
It was pretty much exactly what I expected. A functional little town geared as much towards locals as visitors. Not especially beautiful. No resorts, not much in the way of pristine sandy beaches. Just shops, traffic, people getting on with stuff.
We poked around, had coffee, then jumped on another anti-clockwise bus and got off on the west coast.
From there we wandered past resorts and along the beach until we came across a falafel truck, where we had an excellent vege meze and watched the waves crash against the reef, feeling fairly grateful for the coral sitting out there taking the punishment.
We walked a little further, but eventually the persistent rain won and we surrendered to another bus, completing the loop back to Muri.
One last walk along our now-familiar beach, where the lagoon was somehow still turquoise despite the grey sky.
Tomorrow the sun returns.
Tonight we may venture out in search of something deep fried with mayonnaise.
